SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants are hopeful that Jeff Samardzija, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with tightness in his right (throwing) shoulder, will have to miss just one start.
Samardzija underwent an MRI that revealed inflammation but little else.
"The rest of the shoulder was great," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Samardzija is expected to undergo more tests later this week. His discomfort limited him to one inning in Tuesday's 11-4 loss to Colorado.
Meanwhile, it's already obvious that the scene in the Giants' clubhouse this weekend will feature as many comings and goings as a major airport during a holiday weekend.
"We're going to have some action going with the roster," Bochy said.
Right-hander Tyler Beede was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, then was optioned back to the same club after the Giants' 7-4 win. The Giants wanted an extra arm handy in case a typical Coors Field scoring fest broke out.
The Giants did not name a starter for Sunday's finale of their upcoming three-game series against Philadelphia. Dereck Rodriguez or Ty Blach are candidates to receive the assignment.
Thursday's a scheduled off-day, but certain Giants won't rest. Madison Bumgarner will start for Class A Advanced San Jose in what could be his final Minor League injury rehabilitation outing before he faces Arizona next Tuesday. Right-hander Mark Melancon, recovering from an elbow ailment, will be examined and evaluated at AT&T Park, setting up a possible return to the pitching staff.
Bochy said second baseman Joe Panik (sprained left thumb) has remained ahead of schedule in his recovery and could rejoin the Giants sometime this weekend. The Giants also face a decision regarding outfielder Hunter Pence (right thumb), who's approaching the end of his injury rehab assignment.
