PEORIA, Ariz. -- In the wake of veteran Skip Schumaker's retirement last week, the competition for spots on the Padres' bench has essentially become wide open.
Enter 29-year-old infielder Jemile Weeks, who is quickly off to a strong start here in camp this spring, and many have taken notice.
"He's played very well. He's come in with a great attitude and he has put last year behind him. Everyone's noticed it. He continues to play well wherever we put him on the field," said Padres manager Andy Green.
"He's showing well here."

Weeks went into Sunday's game against the Giants in Scottsdale with seven hits in his first 15 at-bats this spring, including two doubles, one triple and three steals.

He has played second base, third base and shortstop, and Green said the team is considering taking a look at him in the outfield, too.
"It was explained to him very early that he's going to bounce around this spring. He's done that. We'll continue to bounce him around," Green said.
For Weeks, he'd just like to stick around.
Weeks was the 12th overall pick in the 2008 Draft by the A's and was their starting second baseman in 2011 and 2012. He's had only 55 at-bats in the big leagues since 2013, as he's bounced around.
He hopes he'll find a home with the Padres, who are looking at players offering versatility as they go about setting up their bench.
"I've had success at a high level. I know what it feels like. I know what it takes," Weeks said. "I'm able to put the past behind me and build off everything I've been through in the past."
So far, Weeks, who agreed to a Minor League deal with a big league invitation to Spring Training in January, has fit right in with his new team.
"It's gone well. I've enjoyed the staff, the team, I've enjoyed it all. Right now, I'm [staying] in the moment, going out there and playing hard," he said.
"That's all I can ask for."
A second baseman by trade, Weeks has played 57 games in the Minor Leagues at shortstop. He's also played 48 games in the outfield. He's a switch-hitter who can run well.
In short, Weeks has a National League skill set that has, until now, been confined to the American League.
"I just want an opportunity," Weeks said. "I will play the outfield, I will play the infield. I'll be prepared no matter where I'm at. I'm excited for this chance."
