Phillies International Coordinator Jesús "Chalao" Méndez has been selected as the 2018 recipient of the Dallas Green Award, the club announced today.
Méndez, a native of Caracas, Venezuela, is in his second year as the international coordinator, and his 22nd as a member of the Phillies' international scouting department. He was hired by the club in 1997 as the Venezuela scouting supervisor, a title he held until his promotion to Latin American crosschecker in 2010. He was named to his current position in 2017.
A former first baseman and outfielder, Méndez played professionally for 10 seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals organization (1986-92) and with three different teams in the Mexican League (1994-96).   
"This really is an honor for me to receive this award," Méndez said. "I never could have imagined it. We have so many people that work so hard for this organization, and for me to be the recipient of the Dallas Green Award is incredibly special to myself and my family."
The 2018 Dallas Green Award will be presented on the field on Saturday, Sept. 29, prior to the 7:05 p.m. game against the Atlanta Braves. The award was established in 2011 to honor the accomplishments of Green, who spent 62 years in professional baseball, 46 of which were with the Phillies. Green passed away in March 2017 at the age of 82.
The award is presented annually to an amateur or professional scout who best exemplifies the Phillies' standard for scouting while demonstrating the same loyalty, work ethic, dedication and passion as the award's namesake. It is also recognition of the scout's ability to judge not only a player's talent, but also his character and heart.
Past winners of the Dallas Green Award have been Dick Lawlor (2011), Bill Harper (2012), Eddie Bockman (2013), Gordon Lakey (2014), Sal Agostinelli (2015), Roy Tanner (2016) and Joey Davis (2017).
