Nelson shut down for remainder of season

CHICAGO -- The Brewers announced on Monday that right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who was struck in the head by a line drive last week, will be shut down for the rest of the season.

"Jimmy saw the neurologist [on Monday], and he's not going pitch the rest of the year," manager Craig Counsell said. "The neurologist just felt in his case, despite the fact he didn't have a concussion, he still had trauma to his head and, in his view, he felt it best that we don't take a risk so shortly after the moment it happened."

Nelson was struck on the right side of his head by a liner off the bat of the Cardinals' Tommy Pham last Thursday. He spent two nights at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, mostly for observation. A CT scan revealed a small bruise on his brain.

Nelson's next turn in the rotation is Tuesday, in the second game of the three-game series against the Cubs. Right-hander Tyler Cravy (0-7, 6.42 ERA) will start instead.

"Tyler's not stretched out at this point, so there's going to be a bunch of guys involved," Counsell said. "After that we'll stay in order, and then when that start comes up again, we'll have to figure out what we'll do."
