SAN FRANCISCO -- Hoping to add infield depth, the Giants agreed to a Minor League deal with Jimmy Rollins, the highly accomplished shortstop who's striving to extend his big league career to an 18th season.
Rollins, who will compete with Kelby Tomlinson, Ehire Adrianza and Conor Gillaspie, among others, for a reserve infield spot. This could require some adjustment from Rollins, 38. Except for one-third of an inning at second base in 2002, Rollins has played exclusively shortstop -- which, on San Francisco's roster, belongs to two-time Gold Glove Award winner Brandon Crawford.
Since Rollins had not yet officially signed his contract, Giants general manager Bobby Evans declined to comment on the move.

An Oakland native who graduated from Alameda's Encinal High School, Rollins is primarily known for his 15-year tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies, which began in 2000. He captured the National League's Most Valuable Player Award in 2007 besides winning four Gold Glove Awards for defensive excellence and making three NL All-Star teams.
Rollins was traded to the Dodgers before the 2015 season and hit .224/.285/.358 that year. The switch-hitter compiled a slash line of .221/.295/.329 with two home runs in 41 games for Chicago last season before he was released in June. By comparison, Rollins' career slash line is .264/.324/.418.
In 50 career regular-season games at AT&T Park, Rollins has batted .205/.267/.341. He hit .261 (6-for-23) with four RBIs in the six-game NL Championship Series in 2010 against San Francisco.
