Rollins, Phillies grateful for Jackie

CINCINNATI -- The Phillies donned No. 42 jerseys to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day on Monday at Great American Ball Park. In 1997, under the direction of Commissioner Bud Selig, Robinson's No. 42 was retired across all of Major League Baseball in an unprecedented tribute.

Jimmy Rollins went one step further. He received a new pair of blue Nike spikes with Robinson's No. 42 on the heel, and he tweeted about this special day.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel recalled a time he met Robinson at Dodger Stadium before the legend died in 1972.

"I got to talk to him," Manuel said. "I remember talking to him about baseball and about the Dodgers. I asked him questions. It was good. He was a very kind of quiet, stern kind of guy. Real serious like."
