Hardy ready to be activated from 15-day DL
NEW YORK -- Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy will be activated from the 15-day disabled list for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, giving him the expected minimum stay.
"[He was] probably a go about yesterday, but he needed this period, I think," manager Buck Showalter said of Hardy. "He's got a lot of physical issues that he's got behind him now, I hope. He's ready to go tomorrow. I'm looking forward to getting him back."
Hardy was disappointed that he wasn't able to avoid the DL, but he acknowledged that there was a risk of him re-aggravating the groin injury.
"It stinks for me because I know my teammates are going through a lot of things and they are still playing. And I get a little tweak in my groin and have to miss two weeks," said Hardy, who has been traveling with the team during his rehab. "It's frustrating for me in that way."
Hardy did avoid playing in any rehab games and has been taking swings and running at 100 percent with no issues.
"I'm eager. I've been eager for a while now," Hardy said. "So for me, this has been a frustrating couple weeks. But I'm excited to get back out there with my teammates."
Worth noting
• Outfielder Dariel Alvarez will also be back on the active roster on Tuesday. Alvarez had visa issues that did not permit him to go to Canada for the series against the Blue Jays and he was optioned to Class A Advanced Frederick, which ends its season Monday.
• Catcher Matt Wieters remained out of Monday's starting lineup with a nagging left wrist injury. Wieters tried to test it in the cage pregame and said he didn't feel he was the club's best option. Showalter said Wieters is improving.
• Tyler Wilson will make at least one more start for Triple-A Norfolk before the O's consider adding him to the big league roster.
• The Orioles had several special guests on the field prior to Monday's game as the Baruch family met Showalter, Adam Jones and Zach Britton, among others. Lauren Baruch, 24, was one of four young women killed in a car accident on Long Island in July. The friends were part of a group going on a wine-tasting tour at a vineyard and they had hired a limousine, which was struck by an alleged drunk driver.
Lauren had purchased Labor Day tickets as a Father's Day present for her father, Steven, who is a lifelong Orioles fan. His wife, Felicia, and their son, Michael, were also on hand on Monday. The Yankees upgraded the family's seats to behind the home dugout.
