Halos No. 1 prospect Adell promoted to Triple-A

ANAHEIM -- Angels top prospect Jo Adell was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, getting one step closer to reaching the Majors.

Adell, ranked as the Angels’ No. 1 prospect and the No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, hit .308/.390/.553 with eight homers, 15 doubles and 23 RBIs in 43 games with Double-A Mobile. The 20-year-old missed the first 10 weeks of the season after suffering both a sprained right ankle and a strained left hamstring while running the bases in Spring Training.

He played in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Cleveland this year, serving as cleanup hitter for the American League and collecting a single and two walks. He also made a diving grab in right field.

He’s mostly played center field throughout his Minor League career, but he has seen action in right this year with superstar Mike Trout entrenched at center for the Angels.

Adell, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 Draft, was considered untouchable by general manager Billy Eppler at the Trade Deadline as the Angels explored opportunities to improve their pitching staff. He was the only Minor League player that Eppler said was off-limits.

There’s a chance Adell could play his way into a September callup, but the Angels plan to be patient with him as he’s currently not on the 40-man roster.

He’s expected to be a regular for the Angels next year, but the club has to decide what to do with right fielder Kole Calhoun. Calhoun, who is second on the team in homers with 24 and plays solid defense in right, has a $14 million club option for next year that carries a $1 million buyout.
