Maddon loses challenge on Loney's nice play

Call stands as Blue Jays' Mastroianni ruled safe at first base

ST. PETERSBURG -- Joe Maddon challenged and lost on a close call in the eighth inning of Friday night's Rays-Blue Jays contest at Tropicana Field.

With two outs in the eighth, Darin Mastroianni hit a chopper to Rays first baseman James Loney, who attempted to beat Mastroianni by sliding to the bag and touching it with his glove.

First-base umpire Mike Everitt ruled Mastroianni safe, and Loney immediately motioned to Maddon that he thought he had won the race. Maddon approached Everitt and quickly opted to challenge the call.

The crew, headed by Everitt, retreated to the third-base side of the diamond to review the call. After a review that lasted three minutes and 44 seconds, the decision was made that the ruling on the field stands.

The Rays have had 30 challenges this season. Ten have have been overturned, 10 have stood and 10 have been confirmed.
