Torre to be honored for Milwaukee baseball ties
Hall of Fame manager began his playing career with the Milwaukee Braves
Joe Torre's eventful summer just keeps adding highlights. Torre, a recent electee to the Hall of Fame, will also be inducted to the Milwaukee Braves Honor Roll next week. Torre, who began his career in Milwaukee, will be honored by the Brewers and the Milwaukee Braves Historical Association on May 8 at Miller Park.
Torre will be reunited with his brother Frank, one of 12 previous honorees to the Milwaukee Braves Honor Roll. The elder Torre was honored in 2011, and the great Hank Aaron -- who broke Babe Ruth's career home run record in 1974 -- was inducted to the Milwaukee Braves Honor Roll in 2012.
Joe Torre signed with Milwaukee in 1959 and played the first six years of his career there, and he played another three years with the Braves after they relocated to Atlanta. Torre batted .294 with 142 home runs and 552 RBIs and made the All-Star team five times during his Braves tenure.
Torre was traded to St. Louis before the 1969 season in exchange for future Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda, and he went on to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1971. Torre gained even greater fame as a manager, and he won four World Series championships with the Yankees between 1996-2000.
Torre, who has also managed the Mets, Braves, Cardinals and Dodgers in his decorated career, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Expansion Era Committee late last year. He'll be feted as part of the induction class in Cooperstown in July.
