ARLINGTON -- Reliever and starter both made appearances for Triple-A Nashville on Saturday night as they continue to rehab from injuries.
Axford is yet to make an appearance for the A's this season due to a right shoulder strain, but he is getting close to returning, manager Bob Melvin said. Axford pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout Saturday.
"He's probably a guy that as long as he feels good and we get him up to a certain pitch count, might be a little shorter than some that go on these rehab things," Melvin said. "But I'm not sure yet, I know we'll do another one and then maybe we'll be pretty close."
Mengden had surgery on a broken bone in his right foot in February. He threw 3 2/3 innings in his start Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out five. His timetable for returning is still uncertain.
"Right now, it's just kind of getting the kinks off," Melvin said. "It takes a while before you're probably precise in where you're throwing your pitches, but the velocity's good and he feels good, and that's the most important thing."
