Lucroy ties Yount with 3 straight 3-RBI games

Catcher nets six hits as Brewers win three-game series vs. Reds

May 29th, 2016

MILWAUKEE -- Jonathan Lucroy became the first Brewers player to drive in three runs in three straight games since Robin Yount in 1987, and Milwaukee needed every one of those runs Sunday in a 5-4 win over the Reds at Miller Park.
After going 2-for-22 during the Brewers' road trip to New York and Atlanta, Lucroy began the Brewers' homestand by going 6-for-11 in three games against the Reds, with a double, a triple, two home runs, two walks and three runs scored. He boosted his batting average in home games to .341 and his OPS in home games to 1.030.

More significant was this: After coming up empty in his first 17 plate appearances this season with a runner at third base and less than two outs, Lucroy executed in that situation during the first inning of each of the three games in the series.

"It was driving him crazy," manager Craig Counsell said. "I know because it's something he knows he's good at. He knows that's something in his game, that he's able to do that. I see it as one of those things where it was a matter of time where he was going to execute that pretty routinely. It really fits into the style of hitter he is and what he's good at."
Lucroy added an RBI single in the third inning and an RBI triple in the seventh, but his first-inning sacrifice fly stood out.
"It's an approach thing, a mental approach," Lucroy said. "Whenever my mental approach is correct and my mechanics are correct in my swing, I feel like I should do it more times than not. It's a matter of pride. I take it personally when I don't get a guy in with less than two outs.

"Most of the time, when you do get out, you get yourself out, because the pitcher doesn't want you to see anything good to hit. So he's going to try to get you to chase, get you to swing at something bad, swing at his pitch. That's what I've been doing -- I've been swinging at bad pitches. I'm just trying to have good approaches. It's a mental thing, really."
Yount's streak of three straight three-RBI games came in July 1987 against the Mariners and Angels.
