Abreu, Eaton named AL Co-Players of the Week

CHICAGO -- Jose Abreu and Adam Eaton were glad to share the American League Players of the Week Award for the period of July 27-Aug. 2. It was representative of the White Sox turnaround offensively as a team.

But in the opinion of Eaton and Abreu, Melky Cabrera should have been included in the honor as well.

"Yeah, totally. Being honest, I think he deserves it," said Abreu through White Sox interpreter and Spanish language broadcaster Billy Russo. "He deserves the award."

"Melky, I don't know how he didn't win," Eaton said. "I don't know how there couldn't be three, because Melky's been on fire here lately as well."

Eaton hit .517 (15-for-29) with three doubles, a triple, a home run, four RBIs, 10 runs scored and three stolen bases for his first career weekly honor. He led the AL in average, on-base percentage (.600) and runs scored. Abreu batted .400 (10-for-25) with three doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs, seven runs scored, a .500 on-base percentage and an .880 slugging percentage to earn his second career weekly honor (also April 21-27, 2014).

Abreu entered Monday with a 13-game hitting streak, marking his sixth career streak of 13 or more games. Eaton entered Monday with a season-high 11-game hitting streak and had scored a run in 10 straight contests, the longest streak by a White Sox player since Jim Thome opened the 2006 season with a franchise-record 17-game streak.

Since the All-Star break, Eaton leads the AL in runs scored (18) and on-base percentage (.532). This marks the first time White Sox teammates shared a weekly award, and there could have been a third.

Cabrera hit .483 with a .516 OBP, an .828 slugging percentage, five doubles, one triple, one homer and eight RBIs.

"And [Tyler] Saladino came in, stepped in really well," Eaton said. "I mean, top to bottom, [Carlos Sanchez has] been hitting the ball really well. I guess I don't want to leave anybody out. It's been a good team effort so far. We've got to continue that."

"All we are thinking about is playing every day," said Abreu, whose team outscored the opposition, 56-27, during a 7-1 road trip before dropping two of three games to the Yankees this weekend. "We have to keep the focus on that, because that will give us the results. Play every day, try not to think too much ahead. Just every day."
