CLEVELAND -- There wasn't much convincing needed on Jose Abreu's part for manager Rick Renteria to return the first baseman to the White Sox starting lineup on Saturday night.
"He said, 'I'm playing,'" Renteria said with a wry smile.
Abreu exited Friday's loss to the Indians after being hit in the left knee by an Andrew Miller slider. Renteria and head athletic trainer Herm Schneider had to help Abreu off the field, but X-rays weren't needed to diagnose the bruise as mostly muscle got caught by the pitch.
With the White Sox sitting at 1-6 on their current nine-game road trip, Abreu wasn't about to let a little pain knock him out. He made his presence felt in Saturday's 5-3 victory with three hits and one RBI as the White Sox ended a three-game skid.

"It's a little sore in the area, but I have to play," Abreu said through interpreter Billy Russo. "We're going through a tough moment as a team. I have to show up for the guys and for my team.
"When the ball hit me, I thought it was on the knee. I just thought that would be bad. But once we got to the training room and the doctors looked at me, it was right below the knee; it was good. It was sore, but it was good. It was nothing structural or something to be concerned about."
A Major night in the Minors
Friday night proved to be a good one for key components in the White Sox rebuild.
Yoan Moncada, the No. 1 overall prospect per MLBPipeline.com, homered and Carson Fulmer hurled five scoreless innings for Triple-A Charlotte.
Spencer Adams turned in a three-hitter in a 1-0 victory for Double-A Birmingham, throwing 70 of his 96 pitches for strikes and fanning eight.
Catcher Zack Collins launched his ninth homer and Luis Basabe knocked out two hits for Class A Advanced Winston Salem, while Jameson Fisher, the organization's fourth-round pick in the 2016 Draft, homered in his 5-for-5 showing for Class A Kannapolis. Micker Adolfo also went deep in the Kannapolis loss.
