Abreu's HR helps White Sox overcome errors

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- There wasn't much success found for the 2013 White Sox when they made multiple errors during a game.

But despite committing four miscues against the Reds on Wednesday, the White Sox emerged with a 9-5 victory in their '14 home Cactus League finale at Camelback Ranch. The difference in this game compared to some of the 99 losses from last season was that the White Sox had a little offense to make up for the defense.

Adam Eaton had four hits at the top of the order and Jose Abreu launched a three-run homer among his two hits to support the pitching of John Danks. Abreu's blast came during a four-run fourth off of Reds starter Brett Marshall, who is competing for a rotation spot or the long-relief role out of the bullpen.

Abreu's third Cactus League home run was hit well but got help from the swirling wind that caused havoc for the fielders. Leury Garcia, who had three hits from the ninth spot in the order, committed two errors. Danks committed an error on a pickoff play at first, and catcher Adrian Nieto had a throwing error on a steal attempt.

One of Garcia's errors produced a replay challenge in the top of the fifth. With Kristopher Negron on first, Jason Bourgeois hit a grounder to shortstop Alexei Ramirez, whose flip to Garcia at second appeared to get the force with Garcia dropping the baseball on the transfer.

But second-base umpire Quinn Wolcott ruled Negron safe. Manager Robin Ventura challenged the call, and it was upheld through review. The White Sox are 0-for-2 on replay requests.

A few minutes later, in the top of the fifth, Chris Nelson hit a single to center field that scored Negron. Bourgeois attempted to go from first base to third base on the play and was called out on the throw from center fielder Eaton. Reds manager Bryan Price argued the call of third-base umpire Chad Whitson.

The play was reviewed for a short time and Whitson's call was upheld. Cincinnati is 1-for-3 in replay requests this spring.

"There is a newness, no doubt about it," Price said of the new replay system used during Cactus League games. "Because you don't have any way of knowing how close the play is, you just have to run out there and guess. I had to go out there and just stop the game before another play took place. In that situation, I talked to Jason. He felt it was close, but he wasn't sure if he was out or safe. He felt like it was a bang-bang. So that's one of those where maybe it's the only close play we have the rest of the game so we thought we'd review it. Getting used to the protocols, so on and so forth, are a little different."

Marshall allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Danks, who won't pitch in a game again until April 5 in Kansas City, worked 6 1/3 innings against the Reds. He allowed one earned on four hits and struck out five.

The White Sox will leave after the contest for Birmingham, Ala., for a game against their Double-A affiliate on Friday night.
