Altuve widens lead at 2B in AL All-Star vote

HOUSTON -- For the second week in a row, the Astros' Jose Altuve increased his lead as the leading vote-getter among American League second basemen in the latest balloting update for the All-Star Game released Tuesday.
Altuve, aiming to start the All-Star Game for the second year in a row in what would be his fourth appearance overall, has a sizable lead over Robinson Cano of the Mariners. Altuve has 1,606,705 votes and Cano is in second with 1,004,620.

Teammate Carlos Correa, the only other Astros player appearing among the leading AL vote-getters, slipped to fifth among shortstops with 552,670 votes. He trails Xander Bogaerts of the Red Sox (2,116,020), Alcides Escobar of the Royals (1,150,576), Troy Tulowitzki of the Blue Jays (842,544) and Elvis Andrus of the Rangers (642,180).

Altuve entered Tuesday ranked second in the Major Leagues in WAR among position players at 3.8, trailing Toronto's Josh Donaldson. He led all second basemen in batting (.341), on-base percentage (.421), OPS (.967), hits (93), doubles (21), walks (36) and steals (18).
