Rays bring 8th rookie into fold by recalling Dominguez

Right-hander will be 11th player to make Tampa Bay debut in 2015

TORONTO -- Right-hander Jose Dominguez became the eighth rookie on the Rays' 25-man roster when he was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday.

"Very excited about him," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "Showed us in Spring Training, big, powerful arm. Even when he got sent out of big league camp, he kept making strides in Minor League camp, and it carried over into the season."

Dominguez, 24, will be making his Tampa Bay debut, one of 11 players to do so in 2015.

The Rays acquired Dominguez from the Dodgers in a four-player trade on Nov. 20.

Dominguez is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA with a save in two appearances for the Bulls. The Rays' No. 25-ranked prospect last pitched in a game at Gwinnett on Sunday, when he surrendered a hit, a walk and an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.

"They asked me how I felt, and I said, 'Great, I'm ready to go,'" said Dominguez with Charlie Montoyo translating.

After Tuesday night's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays, right-hander Kirby Yates was optioned to Durham. Cash allowed that he felt bad for Yates, who pitched two innings Tuesday night, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out two.

"Kirby did nothing really deserving of being sent down," Cash said. "It's just kind of a product of where we're at, our pitching staff right now. What he did last night, stepping up and we probably extended him a little bit. It was impressive."

Yates appeared in four games and pitched to a 4.15 ERA.
