Fernandez set for first game action since surgery

Marlins righty will oppose Cosart in Florida; Latos to throw bullpen session

NEW YORK -- Jose Fernandez and Jarred Cosart will not be the only Marlins starters on the disabled list throwing on Monday. Mat Latos also is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in what is shaping up as a busy day at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter, Fla.

Fernandez (Tommy John surgery) and Cosart (vertigo) will pitch in an extended spring training game on a back field. Latos went on the disabled list with left knee inflammation on May 24.

"Latos will throw a bullpen on Monday, and possibly throw in a game on Thursday," Miami manager Dan Jennings said.

The anticipated matchup on Monday will start at 10 a.m. ET, when Fernandez and Cosart see game action in a controlled setting. In extended spring games, the coaches can regulate how often batters hit and pitchers pitch.

Fernandez is set to throw 45 pitches in what will be his first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery on May 16, 2014.

If he progresses nicely, Fernandez will soon be headed out on rehab assignments. He could be ready to join the Marlins around July 1.

Cosart, who went on the DL with vertigo on May 18, should be close to returning.

After Latos throws off the mound in his bullpen session, he will likely get at least one rehab start.

Catcher Jeff Mathis (broken right hand) is close to wrapping up his rehab assignment with Double-A Jacksonville.

Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder inflammation) is on a no-throw schedule.

"Alvarez is strictly now on a shoulder strengthening program until they feel comfortable with where he is building the strength back," Jennings said.
