Donaldson needs final push on fan ballot

Reigning AL MVP trails Machado by nearly 600,000 votes

June 28th, 2016

DENVER -- Josh Donaldson remains within striking position of a starting spot on the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot, but he's going to need a big final push to get there.
Donaldson remained in second place when the fan ballot update was released by Major League Baseball on Monday afternoon. The reigning American League MVP has 1,590,183 votes at third base, which puts him behind Baltimore's Manny Machado.

Machado finished the final ballot update with 2,196,732 votes and Donaldson will need to make up the nearly 600,000 gap over the next three days to win a starting spot. Even if he falls short, Donaldson should be a lock to make the AL team as a reserve.
Toronto also has several other players with ranked positions on the ballot. Edwin Encarnacion is second at DH with 1,131,827 votes but trails Boston's David Ortiz (3,400,200) by a distant margin. Russell Martin (981,618) is third at catcher, Troy Tulowitzki (1,136,479) is third at shortstop and Justin Smoak (772,948) is fourth at first base.
