CHICAGO -- The left side of Toronto's infield had a new look during Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Cubs, and according to manager John Gibbons, it might not be a one-and-done change.
Josh Donaldson made the first start of his career at shortstop in the series finale, while Jose Bautista moved from right field to third base. The move allowed the Blue Jays to insert both Norichika Aoki and Ezequiel Carrera into the lineup while Steve Pearce got a day off.
Donaldson made a pair of routine plays late in the game, but he wasn't really tested on anything difficult. Bautista did not have an assist at third, but he did allow a double down the line on a play that would have been difficult for any third baseman, including Donaldson.
"Not a lot of plays, but I thought they looked pretty good out there, kind of natural," Gibbons said following the loss. "We'll see. You may see them out there together again."

Donaldson became the first player to start his career as a catcher and then start a game at shortstop since Ron Brand in 1971 with the Expos. The veteran appeared at shortstop during each of the previous two games after Toronto's middle infielders were lifted for pinch-hitters. He previously played shortstop for one inning with Oakland back in 2013.
By comparison, Bautista is a lot more familiar with his new position. The veteran slugger made five appearances at third earlier this season, and he has started there 346 times during his 14-year career.
