HOUSTON -- Frustrations boiled over for Astros reliever Ken Giles, who threw his glove in the dugout on Wednesday night after he gave up a go-ahead homer to Royals catcher Salvador Perez in the eighth inning of a 4-2 loss at Minute Maid Park.
Astros manager A.J. Hinch kept his cool, saying the 1-2 pitch that Perez launched over the left-field wall following Giles' two-out walk to Alex Gordon was the result of a mistake to the wrong hitter at the wrong time. It was the third home run allowed in four outings this season by Giles, who gave up only two in 70 innings with the Phillies last year.

"This is a result-oriented business," Hinch said. "The slider, as the count gets a little bit deeper and deeper and he sees his pitches, he just capitalized. He's a big league hitter. He's the World Series MVP. It's not like he stinks. He made a good swing on a ball that was hittable and hit it out of the ballpark. It's no more complicated than that."
Giles, acquired in a seven-player trade with Philadelphia in December, had a tough spring and allowed homers in each of his first two outings of the season at Yankee Stadium. He threw a scoreless inning on Saturday at Milwaukee and entered in the eighth inning Wednesday with the game tied, 2-2.
Giles (0-1, 12.27 ERA) got Eric Hosmer to ground out and struck out Kendrys Morales before walking Gordon and grooving a slider to Perez, who connected for his first homer of the season.
"The reality is, at the end of the at-bat, their guy beat our guy," Hinch said. "He was throwing hard. He threw good pitches to him. Perez is a notorious chaser. Ball left in the zone, and he put a good swing on it."
