Hamstring cramp forces Marte to exit game

PHOENIX -- D-backs infielder Ketel Marte was forced to leave Saturday night's 7-0 loss to the Giants in the bottom of the seventh inning after suffering a cramp in his right hamstring while beating out an infield single.

"For us right now, we feel like we got lucky," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said after the game. "You take the player off the field and you always assume the worst, but it was fairly good news what we just got. He's day to day. We'll evaluate him again tomorrow. I'll say right now that he's not in the starting lineup, but hopefully he walks in here tomorrow and feels good enough to be an option for us off the bench."

Marte led off the inning by hitting a grounder to short that Brandon Crawford slid and backhanded before firing to first. Marte was running hard to beat the throw and just before he got to first base, he reached back and grabbed his right hamstring area.

As he crossed the base, Marte began hopping on his left foot before falling forward in the grass.

Arizona athletic trainer Ryan DiPanfilo tended to Marte, who was able to walk off the field under his own power, though he was limping.

Nick Ahmed pinch-ran for Marte at first and stayed in the game at shortstop.

After a slow start to the season, Marte has been a key part of the D-backs' offense during their resurgence in June. Over his last 29 games heading into Saturday, Marte hit .293 with a .953 OPS.
