HOUSTON, TX - Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. announced tonight that Houston Astros left-handed pitcher Dallas Keuchel has won an American League Rawlings Gold Glove Award. This marks Keuchel's third consecutive season (2014-16) to be named the top defensive pitcher in the American League. Astros left fielder Colby Rasmus and right fielder George Springer were also finalists for Gold Glove Awards, which were awarded to left fielder Brett Gardner and right fielder Mookie Betts.
The Rawlings Gold Glove Award was created in 1957, and since then the award has served as the highest symbol of defensive excellence in Major League Baseball. The winners are determined by combining votes from Major League managers and coaches with a sabermetric component.
Keuchel did not commit an error in 32 total chances this season, while recording 27 assists. Dating back to 2013, Keuchel owns a .990 fielding percentage and has committed just two errors in 201 total chances, while recording a Major League-leading 151 assists and 48 putouts in 120 games. Keuchel is the only pitcher in franchise history to win a Gold Glove Award and is the first Astro at any position to win three straight Gold Glove Awards since Craig Biggio won four straight as a second baseman from 1994-97. Prior to Keuchel, the last AL pitcher to win three straight Gold Gloves was Mark Buehrle for the White Sox from 2009-11.
By winning a Gold Glove, Keuchel is now eligible for the Rawlings Platinum Glove, which will be given to the top defender in each league, regardless of position. The winners will be selected via a fan vote at Rawlings.com, which will begin tonight at 8 p.m. CT and close on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT.
This announcement continues a busy awards week, as Jose Altuve was named a finalist for the BBWAA AL Most Valuable Player Award last night. The MLBPA Player of the Year Award, which Altuve was also named a finalist for, will be announced tomorrow, and the Silver Sluggers winners will be announced on Thursday. On Oct. 27, Altuve was named the Sporting News Player of the Year.
