Gausman strong as O's roll to nightcap win

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Orioles completed the sweep of their day-night , home-and-home, split-squad doubleheader with the Red Sox, taking the nightcap, 13-2, on Saturday at JetBlue Park.

"We got a lot of things done, not just W's," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "It's more about getting a lot of people that we need to pitch well this year potentially pitch well, in a good place. We got a lot of work done, a lot of work that we needed to get done today. Eighteen innings, sleep fast, and do it again tomorrow."

Right-hander Kevin Gausman started for the Orioles. Facing a fairly representative Red Sox lineup, Gausman allowed one hit in three scoreless innings, with three strikeouts. Gausman struck out Daniel Nava leading off and David Ortiz to end the first, before striking out Mike Napoli to open the second. All of the righty's strikeouts were registered on split-finger fastballs.

Gausman kept the Red Sox hitless until his seventh batter, Corey Brown, laced a single up the middle with one out in the third.

"Yeah, this is pretty much the lineup that they're going to have, and it's always good when you have that first kind of success against their legit lineup," Gausman said. "I threw some real good fastballs inside on guys, both lefties and righties, so that was more my focus. ... Establish fastball command, and go from there."

The Orioles opened the scoring in the fourth when Ryan Flaherty led off with a walk off Red Sox starter Brandon Workman, and Steve Pearce followed with a single. Nolan Reimold's one-out single scored Flaherty, ending Workman's outing. Henry Urrutia's double off Chris Hernandez scored Pearce.

The Orioles added two runs in the sixth off Brayan Villarreal, and eight more on four hits in the seventh off Miguel Celestino and Shunsuke Watanabe.

The Red Sox had just three hits in the game. They didn't score until Christian Vazquez hit a two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning off Troy Patton.

"Long day, we got our reps in," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "We can do much better defensively, there's no question about it." 

The Red Sox committed six errors in the game.

"I can't say that there's a common thread," Farrell said. "You're looking at guys who have played the positions that they're at, particularly in tonight's game, where things got away from us defensively. And yet we're working each day to shore the infield defense up."

Up next: The Orioles will host a split squad of Pirates at 1:05 p.m. ET on Sunday, with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen scheduled to start for Baltimore, and right-hander Edinson Volquez starting for Pittsburgh. The game is available on Gameday Audio.
