Kiermaier's first triple of season a difference-maker

Three-run knock puts Rays on path to fourth straight victory

May 21st, 2016

DETROIT -- Kevin Kiermaier ended his triples drought at the perfect time on Friday night in the Rays' 7-5 win over the Tigers at Comerica Park.
Kiermaier's three-bagger came with two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth and gave the Rays a 6-3 lead.

"K.K.'s hit, obviously, to be able to separate it right there, we needed that," Rays manager Kevin Cash said.
The speedy Rays center fielder finished second in the Major Leagues in triples in 2015 with 12 (Minnesota's Eddie Rosario had 15). Kiermaier got his first triple in the Rays' second game last season and had logged three by May 20, but none was bigger than the one he hit on Friday night.
Kiermaier laced his triple down the right-field line, chasing home Evan Longoria, Steve Pearce and Logan Morrison, who had been on first. Kiermaier has three triples in three career games at Comerica Park.
"It's just so spacious out here -- probably the biggest outfield in all of baseball," Kiermaier said. "I know there are a couple in the National League, but this is definitely the biggest in the American League. It's just all about placement when it comes to triples. ... I'd like to hit more, but it's all about finding gaps for that right-field line."
