Stewart tosses 3 innings before being sent down

Rookie was called up prior to series finale vs. Braves

MINNEAPOLIS -- Another day brought another fresh arm to cover innings for the Twins, with assuming Cody Stashak's spot in the Minnesota bullpen to give the club an extra arm for extended low-leverage outings if necessary.

As it turned out, Stewart was needed immediately in the Twins' 11-7 loss to the Braves at Target Field on Wednesday and threw 46 pitches in three innings to preserve the other arms in the Minnesota bullpen. And with his job complete, Stewart was optioned back down to Triple-A Rochester following the game.

According to a source, 24-year-old right-hander Randy Dobnak, who began the season in Class A Advanced Fort Myers but dominated three levels of the Minors this season with a combined 2.02 ERA, will receive his first Major League callup on Wednesday as the next man up.

The Twins have shuttled through several young pitchers in that role this season, including Stewart, Stashak, Sean Poppen, and Devin Smeltzer. The Twins have a particular need in that department right now because they are running short-handed with a seven-man bullpen due to the newfound health of the position players on the roster.

"You don't want to have to use, say, [] in a game or [] in a game just simply to cover innings," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "You never want to get into a situation where your late-inning guys are used to simply just cover innings, and we've had guys that have come up and given us pretty good efforts pitching in those length roles."

Stashak also did his part in Tuesday night's 12-7 loss, entering with an eight-run deficit and throwing 44 pitches to take 1 2/3 innings off the bullpen's load following an ineffective start by Jose Berrios. As has been the case several times this season for many of the other young arms, that dictated a move for a fresh arm.

The 25-year-old Stashak allowed five runs in 7 2/3 innings (a 5.87 ERA) with nine strikeouts and no walks in his first five Major League appearances this season. Stewart was recalled for his sixth stint with the Twins this season. He has a 4.66 ERA in 19 1/3 innings in 2019.

Baldelli acknowledged that the conversations with those young pitchers haven't always been easy, but he also noted that they have been understanding about the club's situation and know that there will likely be additional opportunities to return and establish themselves. Smeltzer, for example, originally also filled innings when needed but may have pitched himself into an extended look on the Major League roster.

"Whether you're talking about a veteran like Nelson Cruz or a guy that's just come up, everyone's pulling in the same direction, and everybody's here to win games," Baldelli said. "They know that their contribution might be hitting a home run or getting a save or something like that, or their contribution might be saving your bullpen for the next week by going out there and pitching."
