Kozma, Fornataro called up as Wacha, Garcia hit DL
DENVER -- The news of injuries to Jaime Garcia (left shoulder discomfort) and Michael Wacha (right shoulder stress-reaction) hit Cardinals manager Mike Matheny "like a kick in the gut" on Sunday.
After placing both pitchers on the disabled list, Matheny and the Cardinals called up shortstop Pete Kozma and right-hander Eric Fornataro from Triple-A Memphis to fill those voids Monday.
St. Louis has been playing with a four-man bench the last week, so Kozma gives the team another bench infielder behind Daniel Descalso.
Fornataro has been pitching well this month, posting a 0.87 ERA and three saves in eight games. He'll provide the Cardinals with a fresh bullpen arm in what could be a high-scoring series at Coors Field against the Rockies.
Either Kozma or Fornataro is likely to be sent down Wednesday with the Cardinals announcing Double-A left-hander Marco Gonzales will make his Major League debut that day with a start in place of Garcia. The Cardinals will have to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Gonzales as well.
