Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs voted National League Rookie of the Month for May

Third baseman Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs has been voted the National League Rookie of the Month for May.

In his first full calendar month in the Majors, Bryant ranked among Major League rookie leaders in RBI (1st, 22), home runs (2nd, 7) slugging percentage (2nd, .510), on-base percentage (2nd, .365), runs scored (1st, 20) and total bases (2nd, 52). His .265 (27-for-102) batting average was the sixth-highest among qualifying NL rookies. Bryant's 22 RBI were the third-most by a Cubs rookie during the month of May in the past 100 years, trailing Bob Speake's 29 in 1955 and Ernie Banks' 27 in 1954. The 22 RBI ranked tied for seventh overall in the NL last month, while his seven homers tied for ninth. On May 26th, the 23-year-old clubbed a mammoth 477-foot game-tying homer in the eighth inning of an eventual 3-2 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals. The blast was the first to hit Wrigley Field's newly-installed left field video board. The young slugger had a career-high 12-game hitting streak snapped on May 24th after hitting .349 (15-for-43) with four homers and 13 RBI from May 11th-23rd. Bryant notched his second career three-hit game (also: April 20th) on May 12th, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run in a 6-1 victory over the New York Mets. Since making his Major League debut on April 17th, the 23-year-old has become a fixture in the Cubs lineup, playing in 42 games. He currently leads all MLB rookies with a .273 batting average (42-for-154) and 33 RBI this season. Bryant is the first Cubs player to win NL Rookie of the Month honors since teammate Kyle Hendricks won in August 2014.

Other rookies receiving votes included Joc Pederson (.236, 15 R, 9 HR, 14 RBI, .519 SLG) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; Arizona's Yasmany Tomas (.316, 8 R, 6 2B, HR, 14 RBI); Milwaukee's Michael Blazek (3-1, 1.56 ERA, 17 SO, 17.1 IP); Noah Syndergaard (2-2, 2.55 ERA, 22 SO, 24.2 IP) of the New York Mets; Miami's Justin Bour (.322, 8 R, 19 H, 5 HR, 8 RBI, .627 SLG); Pittsburgh's Jung Ho Kang (.298, 9 R, 25 H, 3 HR, 11 RBI); and San Francisco's Matt Duffy (.313, 9 R, 25 H, 2 HR, 15 RBI).

The National League Rookie of the Month for May, Kris Bryant, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his performance.
