NEW YORK -- ' throwing session on Tuesday did not go well, and the right-hander will not pitch this weekend against the Pirates, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said.
Hendricks, on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right hand, threw on Tuesday for the first time since June 5.
"It didn't go good," Maddon said. "He still felt it. We want him to throw a baseball and just feel the baseball and not feel anything else in his hands. There's no definitive timeframe, no finish line, it's just that he's not ready."
The Cubs will go with Eddie Butler, and in the weekend series against the Pirates, which starts on Friday.
Lackey did not have a good outing on Monday in the Cubs' series opener against the Mets, but Maddon was not concerned about the starting pitching, which hasn't been as dominant as it was last year.
"I have a lot of faith in our guys," Maddon said. "Without real injury, which Kyle is experiencing right now, I believe our guys are going to be fine. ... Our guys are good, they're going to show it again this year, they need our support now and that's what they're going to get."
