Lake County OF Jordan Smith is Minor League Player of the Week

CLEVELAND, OH –The Cleveland Indians today announced that Lake County OF JORDAN SMITH has been named the Indians Minor League Player of the Week for May 28 – June 3. The Indians Player of the Week award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday through the end of the Minor League Baseball season.

Smith, 21, hit .433 (13-30) with 4 2B, 3B, HR and 4 RBI throughout the week, while posting a 1.166 OPS (.433 on-base pct, .733 slugging pct.).  On May 31 vs. West Michigan, Smith went 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and a 2B and registered his second 3-hit game of the week on June 2nd vs. Fort Wayne, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles. Over the course of the week, he raised his batting average over 40 points from .262 to the current .305 mark. For the 2012 season, he is batting .305 (53-174) with 22 runs scored, 9 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs and 22 RBI in 44 games while stealing 5 bases in 5 attempts and posting a .802 OPS (.341 on-base pct., .462 slugging pct.).  He has hit in 10 straight games since May 26 and is currently tied for 12th in the Midwest League in batting average (.305)

The Willmar, MN native was the Indians 9th round selection in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Saint Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN.  In 2011, Smith was tied for 2nd in the NY-Penn League in RBI (47), 3rd in OBP (.403), tied for 5th in doubles (20), tied for 6th in AVG. (.300) and 10th in hits (72).
