Late push could put many Tigers in AL starting lineup

DETROIT -- The Tigers have used final-week vote pushes to get a starter in the All-Star Game before, from Placido Polanco in 2007 to Alex Avila two years ago. If they're going to get another starter into the Midsummer Classic alongside Miguel Cabrera, they'll need another late push.

Jhonny Peralta entered Sunday's action leading American League shortstops in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS, and he's neck and neck with Baltimore's J.J. Hardy for Wins Above Replacement, yet he trails Hardy by about a million votes.

Barring a final surge of votes, Peralta might suffer a similar fate to former Tigers shortstop Alan Trammell -- watching an outstanding first half go unrewarded by voters while losing out to an Orioles shortstop (Cal Ripken Jr.).

Peralta might not be the only one looking up at an Oriole. Though Prince Fielder continues on a pace for 120-plus RBIs, he has the misfortune of playing the same position as Chris Davis, the main competitor standing between Cabrera and another Triple Crown run. Davis now leads Fielder by about 2.2 million votes, and stands less than 400,000 votes behind Cabrera for the AL's top vote-getter.

Though Torii Hunter is closer to a starting spot -- just 300,000 votes behind Jose Bautista for the third and final spot in the AL outfield -- he has to pass more than Bautista. O's right fielder Nick Markakis sits fourth, about 160,000 votes behind of Hunter.

No Tigers outfielder has been voted into a starting spot since Magglio Ordonez in 2007.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via a mobile device -- using the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Fans may submit 25 online ballots during the voting period but can also earn a one-time bonus of 10 additional online ballots. Fans can also once again participate in the Home Run Derby Fan Poll. Fans will have the opportunity to select three players in each league whom they would most like to see participate in the Home Run Derby. The 2013 Home Run Derby -- part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day -- will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio in the United States beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, July 15.

Rosters will be unveiled Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET on the 2013 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Taco Bell. The show will be televised nationally on FOX.

And the voting doesn't end there. The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2013 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient of the Arch Ward Trophy.
