The Texas Rangers today announced that left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to April 30, with a strained right oblique muscle.
To replace Hamels on the active roster, right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass (#60) has been recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
Hamels was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday at Houston after feeling tightness in his right side while warming up in the bullpen prior to the game. He returned to Arlington today for an MRI and an examination with Dr. Keith Meister, which confirmed the diagnosis. It is expected that Hamels will be sidelined for approximately 8 weeks. He will join the club in Seattle this weekend to continue treatment.
Hamels is 2-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 5 starts with Texas this season. This is the 5th time he has been on the DL in his career, the first with Texas.
This will be Bass' second stint with the Rangers this season. His contract was purchased from Round Rock on April 20 and he allowed 6 runs in 3.0 innings on April 25 vs. Minnesota in his only outing. He was optioned to Round Rock on April 28. Bass has allowed one run in 9.1 IP (0.96 ERA) in 4 relief outings with the Express this season. He last pitched on April 30 at Memphis, allowing one run in 1.0 inning.
