Lineup breakdown: Cards-Pirates, Game 1

A look at tonight's starting lineups for Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Cardinals and the Pirates:

CARDINALS

1. Matt Carpenter, 2B -- Carpenter posted a .412 OBP in the 2012 postseason, with a double and a homer in 17 plate appearances. He's 9-for-21 (.429) lifetime against A.J. Burnett.

2. Carlos Beltran, RF -- The 16-year veteran enters his fourth postseason as the all-time leader in playoff slugging percentage (.782) and OPS (1.252). He is tied for ninth all-time with 14 postseason home runs. The switch-hitter batted .315 against righties as opposed to .252 against lefties this season.

3. Matt Holliday, LF -- Holliday is looking to redeem himself after a 2012 postseason in which he hit .224 (11-for-49) with two extra-base hits. He's been hot of late, hitting .378 in September.

4. Matt Adams, 1B -- Adams hit some big home runs for the Cardinals down the stretch, with eight of his 17 homers on the season coming in September. But he struggled against the Pirates in the regular season, going 4-for-30 (.133).

5. Yadier Molina, C -- Molina turned in another solid season both offensively (.319/.359/.477) and behind the plate for the Cardinals, but struggled against Pittsburgh this season, hitting .173 (9-for-52). He has also had a tough time with Burnett, batting .160 (4-for-25) against him in his career.

6. Jon Jay, CF -- After batting .250 in the season's first half, Jay finished strong with a .311 average since the All-Star break. He hit .400 (24-for-60) against Pittsburgh this season, with six doubles and 11 RBIs. He also hit .291 against right-handers in the regular season, as opposed to .220 against lefties.

7. David Freese, 3B -- Freese -- the 2011 NLCS and World Series MVP -- has a .345 career postseason batting average. But he didn't fare well against the Pirates during the regular season, hitting .154 (8-for-52).

8. Daniel Descalso, SS - Descalso -- who hit five home runs this season -- hit two homers in last year's NLDS against the Nationals. His career postseason batting average is .250 (14-for-56).

9. Adam Wainwright, SP -- Wainwright has a 2.48 ERA in 13 career playoff appearances (four starts). In three starts against the Pirates this season, the right-hander went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA. He also pitched well at home, with a 2.53 ERA and 0.94 WHIP at Busch Stadium.

PIRATES

1. Starling Marte, LF -- Marte batted .333 (17-for-51) against the Cardinals this season, with four doubles, three triples and four stolen bases.

2. Neil Walker, 2B -- In his first career postseason game, the hometown hero Walker was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. He looks to build on that despite batting .207 on the road this season versus .295 at PNC Park.

3. Andrew McCutchen, CF-- The National League MVP candidate hit .317 during the regular season but had difficulties with Cardinals pitching, posting a .246 clip (17-for-69). He's hit Adam Wainwright well, however, with a .429 (12-for-28) lifetime average.

4. Justin Morneau, 1B -- Morneau has hit for roughly the same batting average since coming over from the Twins (.260 with Pirates, .259 with Minnesota), but his power numbers are down. He hopes to find the postseason stroke he had in the 2006 ALDS, when he hit .417 with two homers.

5. Marlon Byrd, RF -- Byrd finally got a taste of the postseason with the NL Wild Card Game after 1,250 games without a playoff appearance. The Pirates hope he continues to do what he did Tuesday night, when he homered in his first at-bat and went 2-for-4.

6. Pedro Alvarez, 3B -- Alvarez's line against Wainwright is a microcosm of his season line, with good power numbers but a lot of strikeouts (4-for 19, 2B, HR, 6 RBIs, 7 K).

7. Russell Martin, C -- Four of Martin's 15 homers this season came at Busch Stadium, where he hit .346 (9-for-26). He is also 9-for-22 (.409) in his career against Wainwright.

8. Clint Barmes, SS -- Bucs manager Clint Hurdle is going with the veteran Barmes at short under the bright lights of October. Though he is 1-for-18 in his postseason career, he has hit Wainwright well (7-for-21, 3 2B, HR).

9. A.J. Burnett, P -- Burnett posted a 2.37 ERA at PNC Park this season, but his road mark was 4.22. He has struggled at Busch Stadium in particular, going 1-2 with a 13.50 ERA in four career starts.
