Lineups breakdown: Nationals vs. Giants, Game 4

With their backs against the wall Monday, the Nationals took Game 3 of the National League Division Series in San Francisco. Now, they'll try to even the score at AT&T Park on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1) while the Giants try again to send them home packing.

Here are the starting lineups:

GIANTS

With left-hander Gio Gonzalez on the mound for the Nats on Tuesday, Giants manager Bruce Bochy has opted for Juan Perez in left field over Travis Ishikawa.

Perez is 0-for-5 this postseason, and has five plate appearances in the NLDS. Ishikawa was 2-for-10 in the series, but the left-handed hitter is hitting just .182 against southpaws this season (he has never faced Gonzalez). Perez, a righty, is hitting just .163 against lefties and also has never faced Gonzalez.

Additionally, the right-handed Hunter Pence (4-for-15 this series) is hitting one spot ahead of the switch-hitting Pablo Sandoval (4-for-16) on Tuesday.

NATIONALS

For the Nats to force a Game 5 back in the District of Columbia, several players will have to keep their small but solid track records going against Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong.

From Ian Desmond (4-for-10, one home run) to Denard Span (5-for-13 with two doubles and a triple) to Adam LaRoche (3-for-10 with two doubles), Washington needs its core players to be productive once again after it was quiet in Games 1 and 2 before coming alive in Game 3.

Span is 2-for-15 in the series, Desmond is 2-for-14 and LaRoche and Jayson Werth are both 1-for-14. Wilson Ramos is 1-for-13. Bryce Harper is only marginally better at 3-for-14, but he has two home runs.

On the other hand, Anthony Rendon has been stronger while going 7-for-15 -- all singles -- in the three games.

On the mound, Gonzalez did not fare well in the 2012 NLDS as he walked 11 in 10 innings while allowing five earned runs (4.50 ERA) over his two starts in Games 1 and 5. Gonzalez has been good down the stretch for Washington as went 4-1 with a 2.36 ERA over his final seven starts.
