Season likely over, Morrison to have MRI on wrist
Uncertain if surgery will be required for Rays' first baseman/DH
TORONTO -- Logan Morrison suffered a tendon strain of his left wrist (ECU strain) while swinging at a pitch in the fourth inning of Sunday afternoon's game at Yankee Stadium.
Tentatively, the plan is for the first baseman/DH to fly to the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday where he will have an MRI and be seen by hand specialist Dr. Doug Carlan.
Though it has yet to be determined if surgery will be required, he is expected to be out for the remainder of the season. Morrison will be a free agent after the season and noted of his plight: "Yeah, it [stinks]."
Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters that Morrison's injury will "open some at-bats" for others on the roster such as Richie Shaffer, who started at DH on Monday night against the Blue Jays.
Worth noting
• Matt Duffy, who had surgery on his left Achilles on Friday, was said to be doing well on Monday. The Rays' shortstop is off crutches and getting around on a scooter that allows him to put his left leg up while manuevering via the scooter. He is expected to make a return visit to North Carolina (where the surgery was performed) to be re-evaluated on Sept. 27.
Duffy is expected to be ready for Spring Training. He only played in 21 games for the Rays after coming to the team in a deal that sent Matt Moore to the Giants.
• Xavier Cedeño (neck tightness) threw on Monday and, according to Cash, is expected to pitch again this season.
The left-hander has not pitched since Aug. 29 at Boston. His last eight appearances since Aug. 16 have been scoreless.
Hoping to shore up the bullpen in Cedeno's absence, left-hander Dana Eveland was selected from Triple-A Durham. To make room on the 40-man roster for Eveland, right-hander Tyler Sturdevant was designated for assignment.
