Cain continues to lead all NL players in the Baseball-Reference version of wins above replacement, but he was banged up during the Brewers' four-game series split with the Cardinals. Cain left Thursday's game with cramping in his right hamstring, was hit on the elbow with a pitch Friday, then endured a double dose of discomfort on Saturday when he was hit by another pitch and left a Milwaukee loss with a groin tweak.
On Sunday, Brewers manager Craig Counsell left Cain out of the lineup for the first time in a month. In the same game, Milwaukee lost third baseman and fellow All-Star Game candidate to a recurrence of pain in his right wrist.
Asked whether either player was a candidate for the DL, Counsell said, "Not right now. We'll see how [Monday] goes with treatment for them, but if we have two players who are unable to play for a while, we'll just see what [Monday] brings. The off-day is helpful, for sure."
Shaw ranked outside the top five NL third basemen, a race being dominated by the Rockies' (1,706,923 votes).
