Dodgers to call up Wieland to face Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- Joe Wieland will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start for the Dodgers Wednesday night and Carlos Frias will be moved back to start Thursday, manager Don Mattingly said on Tuesday.

Wieland, 3-0 for Oklahoma City, is already with the club here and said his arm finally feels strong in his second year of recovery from Tommy John surgery. He will be the ninth starting pitcher for the Dodgers and said he "doesn't want to be one and done," a reference to the shuttle that has brought David Huff, Mike Bolsinger and Scott Baker into and out of the rotation so far.

Wieland said the seemingly endless flurry of roster moves in the wake of injuries to Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy have unsettled the Oklahoma City starters as well.

"Down there, we expect anything to happen because just about everything has happened," he said. "You're here one day, you're outrighted. We've also had three or four starters on hold and then nothing's happened. We see it and have come to expect it. It's not as big an issue as it was in the beginning."

Wieland will start on normal rest, while Mattingly said Frias can use the extra day of rest. Frias pitched 5 1/3 innings in his first start Friday night. But because the Dodgers used seven relievers on Sunday, Frias was on call Monday night instead of throwing his usual between-starts bullpen session.

Wieland said he credits his Spring Training pairing with Clayton Kershaw in games and bullpen sessions for helping him better understand how to prepare to pitch in the Major Leagues.

"I saw what he did to get ready and copied it all," Wieland said. "If it works for him, he's got to be doing something right. I didn't ask a lot of questions. I had my eyes locked on him."
