Van Slyke safe at second after call overturned

SAN DIEGO -- The Dodgers won a challenge in the ninth inning of their game against the Padres on Friday night.

With one out and Scott Van Slyke on first base, A.J. Ellis grounded to second baseman Jace Peterson, who lunged at a retreating Van Slyke, with second-base umpire Alfonso Marquez calling Van Slyke out. Peterson threw to first in time for a double play that would have ended the inning.

But the call was overturned on replay, with Van Slyke sent to second base, even though he never touched the bag on the original play. San Diego manager Bud Black argued, but Van Slyke was allowed to stay at second base.

Miguel Rojas followed with an infield single off pitcher Dale Thayer's glove that sent Van Slyke to third, but Dee Gordon flied out to end the inning.
