Machado not bothered by boos in Oakland

OAKLAND -- Manny Machado has heard constant boos since the Orioles arrived at O.co Coliseum on Friday, but O's manager Buck Showalter believes the 22-year-old third baseman is handling himself well -- and perhaps even using the heckling to fuel him.

"I thought he kind of fed off of it," Showalter said before Saturday's game.

In Friday's series-opening loss, Machado went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh.

"There's a lot of people watching that go, 'Gosh, how does somebody do that in that environment?'" said Showalter. "It's hard. You realize how many people are hoping and expecting failure.

"I think I had more anxiety about it than he did."

Machado's teammates have rallied around him and are keeping the mood loose in a hostile environment.

"What else are you going to do?" Showalter said. "In the whole scheme of life, it's not that big a deal. We try to keep that in mind."

The tension between the two teams stems from a series of incidents involving Machado in Baltimore six weeks ago. Things seemed relatively tame -- at least on the field -- in the series opener, but three Orioles batters did get hit on Friday.

"The last one I wasn't very fond of at all," Showalter said, referring to Adam Jones getting plunked on the left shoulder by A's reliever Ryan Cook during the eighth inning.
