Salvation Army Shelters Receive Additional Boost From Joe Maddon's Thanksmas

Joe Maddon’s sixth annual Thanksmas officially ended on December 14, when Maddon and his volunteers served meals at their fourth and final stop, the Salvation Army Shelter in Tampa.

But the giving isn’t over.

As a result of donations received, including those online and from the Thanksmas fundraiser at 717 South in Tampa on December 9, the four shelters visited by Thanksmas in 2011 will be receiving another boost from Maddon’s project.

The Salvation Army centers in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Bradenton and the Sallie House in St. Petersburg will each receive more than $4,000 in additional aid.

“The goal is to expand Thanskmas in some fashion every year and thanks to the generosity of so many people we were able to do more for those less fortunate this year,” said Maddon, who personally funds the costs of meals and gifts to those at the shelters.  “I am very grateful to everyone who was involved this year whether it was by volunteering or donating.  That’s really the point of all of this, to create awareness and unite our community.”

Rays third base coach Tom Foley and Rays radio broadcaster Dave Wills will deliver the checks to each shelter today, Monday, December 19.
