Stats of the Day: It's a Mad world

Here are five interesting items from around the big leagues this weekend …

• On Sunday, Madison Bumgarner went the distance on a three-hitter, fanning 14 to highlight a 5-0 Giants win over the Nationals. In his previous outing, the left-hander threw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts. He is the first Giants pitcher since at least 1914 to have consecutive complete games with at least 12 strikeouts, and the first hurler since R.A. Dickey in June 2012 to do it. Bumgarner is the second Giants pitcher since 1914 to have a least 14 strikeouts in a shutout, joining Matt Cain when the righty threw his perfect game on June 13, 2012. Cain fanned 14 as well. Bumgarner's superior day also included a home run, allowing him to make the claim as the first Giants pitcher since Juan Marichal on Sept. 12, 1963, to homer and throw a shutout with at least 10 strikeouts.

• Zack Greinke lowered his ERA to 1.58, surrendering a run in seven innings to the Reds as the Dodgers took a 2-1 win on Sunday. Since 1969, only Dwight Gooden in 1985 (1.53 ERA) and Greg Maddux in '94 (1.56 ERA) have qualified for the ERA title and finished the season with an ERA below 1.60. Greinke's ERA+ stands at 232 for the season, while his teammate Clayton Kershaw's rests at 154. The Dodgers last had two qualifying pitchers finish with marks above 150 in 1957, when Don Drysdale posted a 153 ERA+ and Johnny Podres a 155 ERA+.

• On Sunday, the Orioles tied a Major League high for the season with 26 hits and cruised to an 18-2 win over the Athletics. Baltimore tied Boston for that hit high, a mark that was established just the day before. Led by Gerardo Parra's five hits, the O's had six players collect at least three hits. Those six are the most for the franchise since six Browns players had at least three in a 16-0 win over the Tigers on Sept. 9, 1922.

• In the Mariners' 10-8 win over the Red Sox on Sunday, Nelson Cruz connected for his 36th home run, with this solo shot also representing his 26th big fly on the road. Cruz needs three more to tie Ken Griffey Jr. (1997) for the most by any Seattle player. Babe Ruth (1927) and David Ortiz (2006) share the American League record for most road homers, with 32.

• On Sunday, Chris Sale fanned 15 and allowed one hit as the White Sox defeated the Cubs, 3-1. Sale produced his 11th double-digit-strikeout game of the 2015 season. He is the ninth AL left-hander since 1973 (the first year of the DH) to have that many.
