Major League Baseball statement

Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. issued the following statement today regarding the sudden passing of William H. (Bill) Schweitzer, who was 70. As a partner with the Washington, DC law firm BakerHostetler, Schweitzer oversaw Major League Baseball's Government Relations function. His association with Baseball spanned approximately a quarter-century, dating back to his tenure as general counsel to former American League President Dr. Bobby Brown.
 
Commissioner Manfred said: "I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Schweitzer, a respected colleague whom I have worked with for more than 25 years. Bill served the game under three Commissioners and two American League Presidents and helped our game in numerous ways. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I send my deepest condolences to his family, his friends and everyone at BakerHostetler."

Commissioner Emeritus Allan H. (Bud) Selig added: "Bill was a trusted friend and adviser during a time of considerable change for our sport. His counsel was vital toward navigating our way through many challenges that the game once faced. Like his many friends throughout Major League Baseball today, I am thinking of Bill's wife Leslie and their entire family at this difficult time."
