Machado hits walk-off HR to top A's in 13th
BALTIMORE -- Manny Machado hit a walk-off homer off Aaron Brooks in the 13th inning as the Orioles edged the Athletics, 8-6, in Friday's series-opening marathon game.
Machado's blast scored Caleb Joseph, who was mobbed coming around home plate as he gave the O's their first runs since the seventh. Rule 5 Draft pick Jason Garcia picked up his first career Major League win in his second appearance since May 10.
"I was pretty nervous when I went out there," Garcia said. "But I try not to let it overwhelm me and just trust my stuff."
Down to their last strike, Danny Valencia's two-out RBI single kept Oakland's hopes alive. The A's started the ninth inning on a pair of infield singles off Orioles All-Star closer Zach Britton and, after pulling within one on a groundout, Valencia sent a ball shooting into right field.

"The game's not always fair," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Britton's blown save. "J.J. [Hardy] hits a line drive. I don't think I've ever seen a ball hit a guy's foot and stop right there. That made it even better, all the baseball gods you overcame tonight. It didn't look like there was going to be much going in our favor. They soft-served quite a few out there."
Chris Davis -- who has 13 homers and 32 RBIs over his past 22 games -- made no mistake about the fate of A's reliever Fernando Abad's 1-2 pitch, which sailed into right field's Eutaw Street in the seventh inning to give Baltimore its first lead of the game. Prior to that, the Orioles' only offense had been Adam Jones, who hit a three-run homer off spot starter Brad Mills in the fifth and had a sac fly in the seventh.
Oakland jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on O's starter Ubaldo Jimenez, highlighted by Stephen Vogt's two-run homer in the fifth inning. Coco Crisp had four-hits for the A's, three of which were doubles.

Machado hits 25 in style: The O's third baseman was the first batter to face Brooks and made him pay with a line drive that had enough to clear the fence. Machado's blast scored Joseph, who doubled, and he managed to get into the home dugout to grab the ice chest and dump it on Machado.

"It felt great. It was a long, grinding game, and we came out with the win," Machado said. "Kept battling at the end, kept fighting, and it just [stinks] that we gave up the lead in the ninth with those [weak] base hits. But you can't do anything about that." More >
Seventh-inning shambles: Having already watched a four-run lead shrink to one, the A's came undone in the seventh. Two consecutive infield singles set up Jones' game-tying sacrifice fly. Abad, riding a 13-inning scoreless streak, proceeded to serve up Davis' two-run monster shot. The A's bullpen, despite an otherwise impressive performance thereafter, suffered its 23rd loss of the season.

Davis and Jones go deep: Davis has 85 RBIs on the season, tied for first in the American League, as he hit his seventh home run of the month.
Down four, Jones put the Orioles on the board, sending Mills' 0-1 offering into left field -- scoring Junior Lake and Gerardo Parra -- for his 20th homer of the season. The All-Star center fielder, who also picked up an outfield assist, struck again with a one-out sacrifice fly in the seventh to knot it up at 4.

"It would be easy to forget we were down 4-0 in that game," Showalter said. "I thought Jonesy had the key blow, and I thought the hit-by-pitch of Parra was a big play. Jonesy, that was probably, looking back at it, as key a hit as we had, getting us back and getting some positive feelings back."
Footsies: With runners at second and third and two outs in the ninth inning of a tie game, J.J. Hardy lined a comebacker at right-hander Fernando Rodriguez's foot. Rodriguez, unaware that the ball was still at his foot, looked at his teammates for help before rediscovering it and firing it to first in time for the inning-ending out, sending the game to extras.

"That was the longest second and a half I've ever experienced in my life," Vogt said. "I had to find it first, then Fernando had no idea and I'm just screaming, 'Feet, feet, feet!' For him to gather himself and make that throw, that was pretty impressive. That was definitely something I've never seen before."

A's: Right-hander Chris Bassitt, who has a 2.03 ERA in four starts since his return from Triple-A Nashville, will take the mound at Camden Yards on Saturday for a 4:05 p.m. PT start against the Orioles in the second game of a four-game series. Bassitt held Baltimore to five hits across seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win in Oakland last week.
Orioles: Baltimore will send Miguel Gonzalez to the mound for Saturday's 7:05 p.m. ET game. Gonzalez has been inconsistent this season and has been on a recent slide of short starts. The righty is 9-8 with a 4.45 ERA on the season.
