DUNEDIN, Fla. -- The Blue Jays and Red Sox got into a pitchers' duel on Friday afternoon at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium with Toronto right-hander Marcus Stroman tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings and Boston's Steven Wright responding with four scoreless of his own.
Toronto went on to win, 2-1, in 10 innings after the game was handed over to the bullpens, but each starter had an impressive, if not dominating, outing. Top relievers Drew Storen, Brett Cecil and Roberto Osuna also looked good for the Blue Jays, while the Red Sox received scoreless frames from Carlos Marmol and Noe Ramirez.
Stroman made his third start of the spring, and he has continued to look better with each outing he makes. Toronto's likely Opening Day starter scattered three hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out four against a lineup that included Mookie Betts, Brock Holt, Travis Shaw and Jackie Bradley Jr. among others.

The 24-year-old Stroman was expected to throw four innings but he went back out to record an additional two outs because of a low pitch count. Stroman said the goal is to stretch out more and more with each spring outing.

"I wanted to go as deep as I can, put the boys in a position to win," Stroman said. "I'm looking to go nine a lot this year and so anything I can do to keep my efficiency up and my pitch count low I'm going to do. I feel great and I feel ready to go."
Toronto rested most of its regular position players to avoid the knuckleballer Wright, who responded by also scattering three hits and walking just one with a strikeout. The Blue Jays' lone attempt at a big rally vs. Wright came in the second when Justin Smoak and Domonic Brown reached base to lead off the inning, but Wright induced a double play off the bat of Junior Lake and then got Matt Dominguez to ground out to end the frame.

"Once I stayed back, I was able to accelerate through the ball, which helps me out," Wright said. "I've been working tirelessly to control my body and stay back. I still have work to do, but I felt really pleased."

Both teams were locked into a scoreless tie until the bottom of the eighth inning when Blue Jays catcher A.J. Jimenez hit an RBI single to center field. That followed a walk by Andy Burns and a single by Casey Kotchman. Boston's Sam Travis then tied it with a homer in the ninth.
Jon Berti delivered the game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Up next for the Red Sox: Left-hander Henry Owens gets the start for the Red Sox on Saturday when they host the Marlins at 1:05 p.m. ET. Owens tossed three scoreless innings on Monday against the Rays. Other pitchers scheduled to see action include Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa and Craig Kimbrel. The game can be seen on MLB.TV.
Up next for the Blue Jays:R.A. Dickey will make his third start of the spring when the Blue Jays visit the Phillies in a 1:05 p.m. ET start on Saturday afternoon at Bright House Field. The game can be seen live on MLB.TV. Dickey is expected to throw four innings and will be followed on the mound by Roberto Hernandez, Brad Penny, Steve Delabar and Ryan Tepera. It wasn't immediately clear which position players would be going on the road but some regulars are expected to be in the lineup considering Bright House Field is a short 10-minute drive from Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
