Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired right-handed pitcher Ryan Garton and catcher Mike Marjama from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for AA left-handed pitcher Anthony Misiewicz, low-A infielder Luis Rengifo and a player to be named later.
 
To make room on the Major League, 40-man, roster, Seattle has designated catcher Tuffy Gosewisch for assignment.
 
Garton, 27, made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in 2016. In parts of two big league seasons (2016-2017) he is 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 1 save in 44 games, all in relief. This season, he has had three stints with the Rays (April 22-30, May 24-28 and May 31-June 10) and has appeared in a total of 7 games. He is 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA (10 ER, 10.1 IP).
 
This season with AAA Durham, Garton is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA (6 ER, 33.0 IP) and 4 saves in 24 games, including 1 start. He's limited opposing hitters to a .162 batting average against and allowed just 18 hits in 33.0 innings while striking out 46 and walking just 16. In his minor league career since being drafted by Tampa Bay in the 34th round of the 2012 Draft out of Florida Atlantic, Garton has posted a 26-6, 2.63 (85 ER, 290.1 IP) mark with 25 saves. He's struck out better than 1 batter per inning pitched, notching 292 strikeouts in 290.1 innings.
 
Marjama, 28, has spent the season with AAA Durham. He's hitting .274 (72x263) with 16 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs and 51 RBI in 72 games with the Bulls. Marjama has caught 48 games this season, starting 46, and has thrown out of 43 opposing base runners attempting to steal a base.
 
Marjama was originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 23rd round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State University. In seven minor league seasons, he is a .280 hitter (477x1705) with 109 doubles, 11 triples, 34 home runs and 228 runs batted in.
 
Misiewicz, 20, went 8-5 with a 4.75 (63 ER, 119.1 IP) in 23 starts combined between High-A Modesto (4/8-6/22 & 6/26-7/3) and AA Arkansas (6/23-25 & 7/4-current) this season. The left-handed starter combined limited opponents to a .267 (122x457) average, while walking 38 and striking out 117. He was named California League Pitcher of the Week twice in 2017 (May 1-7 & June 5-11). Misiewicz was originally selected by the Mariners in the 18th round in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Michigan State University. In 3 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he went 18-17 with a 4.40 ERA (158 ER, 323.1 IP) in 66 games, 59 starts.
 
Rengifo, 20, hit .250 (100x400) with 65 runs scored, 24 doubles, 4 triples, 11 home runs, 44 RBI, 8 HBP, 33 walks and 29 stolen bases in 102 games with A Clinton this season. The switch-hitting infielder was originally signed as international free agent on July 8, 2013. In 4 minor league seasons in the Seattle organization, he hit .256 (244x953) with 169 runs scored, 52 doubles, 14 triples, 15 home runs, 108 RBI, 107 walks and 81 stolen bases in 260 career games.
 
Gosewisch, 33, has spent the majority of the season with AAA, but also appeared in 11 games with Seattle (May 5-21) this season. In 65 games with the Rainiers, he hit .219 (47x215) with 22 runs scored, 18 doubles, 4 home runs, 28 RBI and 26 walks. He threw out 17-of-51 baserunners (33.3%), which is the 3rd-highest caught stealing percentage in the Pacific Coast League this season among qualifying catchers. Gosewisch hit .071 (2x28) with 1 run in 11 games with Seattle after he was recalled on May 5.
 
Gosewisch was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from the Atlanta Braves on January 26, 2017. Prior to that he was claimed by the Braves from the Arizona Diamondbacks on November 18, 2016. In parts of 4 seasons with Arizona (2013-16) and Seattle (2017), he has hit .190 (80x420) with 25 runs scored, 17 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs, 30 RBI and 18 walks in 137 games. In 11 minor league seasons with Philadelphia (2005-2012), Toronto (2012), Arizona (2013-2016) and Seattle (2017), he hit .244 (711x2912) with 349 runs scored, 191 doubles, 7 triples, 65 home runs and 357 RBI in 865 career games.
