Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has acquired infielder Patrick Kivlehan from the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the Mariners 40-man roster, RHP Evan Scribner was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
 
Kivlehan, 26, hit .184 (26x141) with 17 runs scored, 8 doubles, 1 home run, 16 RBI, 11 walks and 2 stolen bases in 36 games with AAA Round Rock this season. He has appeared in games at 3 different positions, including first base (16 GS), third base (16 GS) and designated hitter (4 GS). Kivlehan was the player to be named later from the November 16th trade with the Rangers in which the Mariners acquired outfielder Leonys Martin and right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass from Texas in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen, outfielder James Jones and a PTBNL.
 
Kivlehan was the Mariners 4th round selection in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Rutgers University. In four minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, he hit .288 (507x1762) with 262 runs, 99 doubles, 16 triples, 70 home runs, 318 RBI, 54 stolen bases, a .352 on-base percentage and a .481 slugging percentage in 461 games. In 2015, he hit .256 (121x472) with 58 runs, 25 doubles, 1 triple, 22 home runs, 73 RBI, 36 walks and 14 stolen bases in 123 games in his first full season with AAA Tacoma. He led the Rainiers in games played (123), while also finishing among the team leaders in home runs (T1st, 22), doubles (2nd, 25), RBI (3rd, 73), hits (3rd, 121) and walks (3rd, 36). His 22 home runs ranked T7th in the Pacific Coast League. He also participated for the U.S.A. in the Pan Am Games, hitting .342 with a team-leading 3 home runs.
 
Scribner, 30, has not pitched this season after being placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 (retroactive to March 25) with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.
 
Scribner was 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA in a career-high 54 appearances for Oakland in 2015. He struck out 64 hitters in 60.0 innings pitched while walking just 4 (out of 238 batters faced). His 16-to-1 strikeout ratio last season led all Major League relievers, as did his 0.60 walks per 9.0 innings pitched. Scribner missed the month of September with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle.
 
Scribner has pitched in the Majors for parts of five seasons with Oakland (2012-2015) and San Diego (2011). In his big league career, he is 5-2 with a 4.21 ERA in 125 relief appearances. He's struck out 134 batters while walking only 27 in 147.2 innings pitched.
