Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has added outfielder Ben Gamel to the Mariners active Major League roster and recalled catcher Jesus Sucre from AAA Tacoma.
 
Gamel (#16) and Sucre (#2) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:10 pm PT) vs. the Angels.
 
Gamel, 24, was acquired from New York (AL) on Wednesday (Aug. 31) in exchange for right-handed pitchers Jio Orozco and Juan De Paula. The left-handed hitting outfielder hit .308 (149x483) with 80 runs, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 6 home runs, 51 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 116 games with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. He was named International League Most Valuable Player on Tuesday (Aug. 30). Among International League leaders at the time of the trade, Gamel ranked 1st in runs (80), 3rd in hits (149), 5th in stolen bases (19), 6th in batting (.308) and 9th in total bases (203). The 5-foot-11, 187-pounder made his Major League debut earlier this season with the Yankees on May 6 vs. Boston. In 6 games with New York, Gamel was 1-for-8 (.125) with 1 run, 1 walk and 1 strikeout. In 2015, Gamel was named International League Rookie of the Year after batting .300 (150x500) with 77 runs, 28 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 64 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 129 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. A native of Neptune Beach, Florida, Gamel was selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Bishop Kenny High School (Jacksonville, Fla.).
 
Sucre, 28, hit .273 (27x99) with 7 runs, 4 doubles, 1 triple and 11 RBI in 29 games with AAA Tacoma this season. Earlier this season, Sucre was on the 60-day disabled list from March 1 to July 6 after having surgery to repair damage in his right ankle on Jan. 26, 2016 in Seattle. He sustained a fractured right fibula during winter ball in Venezuela on Jan. 17. After being activated from the disabled list, Sucre hit .125 (1x8) with 2 walks in 3 games with Seattle before being optioned to Tacoma on July 20. Prior to being activated from the disabled list, Sucre combined to hit .241 (7x29) with 2 runs, 1 double and 4 RBI in 9 games on a rehab assignment with AZL Mariners (4 G) and AAA Tacoma (5 G).
