Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today at the 2016 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings that the club has agreed to terms with catcher Jesus Sucre on a 2017 contract. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Sucre, 28, appeared in a total of nine games with the Mariners in 2016, hitting .480 (12x25) with four runs, two doubles, one home run and five RBIs. Six of the nine games came after Sept. 1, and he hit .647 (11x17) with both doubles, and a home run in those six games.
Sucre was on the 60-day disabled list from March 1 to July 6 after having surgery to repair damage in his right ankle on Jan. 26, 2016 in Seattle. He sustained a fractured right fibula during winter ball in Venezuela on Jan. 17. After being activated from the disabled list, Sucre hit .125 (1x8) with two walks in three games with Seattle before being optioned to Tacoma on July 20. He hit .273 (27x99) with seven runs, four doubles, one triple and 11 RBIs in 29 games with Tacoma.
Prior to being activated from the disabled list, Sucre combined to hit .241 (7x29) with two runs, one double and four RBIs in nine games on a rehab assignment with AZL Mariners (4 G) and AAA Tacoma (5 G).
In parts of four Major League seasons, he has hit .209 (50x239) with 18 runs, 10 doubles, two home runs and 20 RBIs in 90 games.
He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent on May 25, 2005 by Atlanta.
