Seattle Mariners Director of Player Development Andy McKay announced today the Mariners Minor League Awards for the 2016 season: OF Tyler O'Neill (AA Jackson) received the Ken Griffey Jr. Minor League Hitter of the Year, RH Andrew Moore (High-A Bakersfield/AA Jackson) received the Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year, INF Dalton Kelly (A Clinton) received the Edgar Martinez PTPA Award, INF Zach Shank (AA Jackson/AAA Tacoma) received the Alvin Davis "Mr. Mariner" Award, LHP David Rollins (AAA Tacoma/Seattle) received the Dan Wilson Minor League Community Service Award and manager Mitch Canham (A Clinton) received the Dave Henderson Minor League Staff Member of the Year Award.
 
O'Neill, Moore, Kelly, Shank, Rollins and Canham will be honored in a pre-game ceremony at Safeco Field prior to the Mariners game vs. the Athletics on Saturday, October 1.
 
THE KEN GRIFFEY JR. MINOR LEAUGE HITTER OF THE YEAR
Tyler O'Neill (OF: 2013 - 3rd round - Garibaldi Secondary, British Columbia)
 
O'Neill, 21, hit .293 (144x492) with 68 runs scored, 26 doubles, 4 triples, 24 home runs and 102 RBI in 130 games with Jackson. He set a career-high with 102 RBI, leading all Mariners farmhands in RBI this season. Among Southern League leaders he led the league in RBI (102), slugging percentage (.508), OPS (.882), extra-base hits (54), total bases (256) and intentional walks (4), while also ranking 2nd in home runs (24), home runs per at-bat (20.50) and on-base percentage (.374), 4th in average (.293), 5th in hits (144), walks (62) and total plate appearances (575), 6th in at-bats (492), T6th in doubles (26) and 8th in runs scored (68) and games played (130). O'Neill, who represented Canada on the World Team in the 2016 Futures game, was a Player of the Week (May 23-29), Player of the Month (May), Mid-Season All-Star, Postseason All-Star, and Southern League MVP. He was also named Southern League Player of the Year by Baseball America and named to the Baseball America Minor League All-Star Team as an outfielder. O'Neill also hit .448 (13x29) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 9 RBI and 4 walks over 7 postseason games to lead Jackson to a Southern League Championship in 2016. He was named Championship Series MVP, after batting .429 (6x14) with 3 runs scored, 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 1 walk in 3 games. O'Neill, who was the Mariners 3rd round selection out of Garibaldi Secondary School, Maple Ridge, British Columbia, in the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft, was also named the Mariners 2015 Co-Minor League Player of the Year.
 
THE JAMIE MOYER MINOR LEAUGE PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Andrew Moore (RHP: 2015 - 2nd round - Oregon State University)
 
Moore, 22, went 12-4 with a 2.65 ERA (48 ER, 163.0 IP) in 28 starts combined between Bakersfield and Jackson in 2016. The 6-foot-0, 200-pound righty, limited opponents to a .247 (148x600) average, while walking 31 and striking out 133 in 163.0 innings. He led all Mariners farmhands in ERA (2.65), while also ranking 3rd in innings pitched (163.0 IP), T3rd in wins (12) and 5th in strikeouts (133). Moore opened the season with Bakersfield, going 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA (10 ER, 54.2 IP) in 9 starts before being promoted to Jackson on May 24. He was named California League Pitcher of Week, April 18-24, after allowing only 1 walk and striking out 3 over 7.0 hitless innings in Bakersfield's 10-0 win over Lake Elsinore on April 22. Moore went 9-3 with a 3.16 ERA (38 ER, 108.1 IP) in 19 starts with Jackson, including going 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA (10 ER, 45.1 IP) over 7 starts, July 17-Aug. 18. He helped lead the Generals to a 2016 Southern League Championship, going a combined 0-0 with a 1.20 ERA (2 ER, 15.0 IP) in 2 starts during the postseason. He recorded a no decision in Jackson's 3-0 10.0-inning win in game 1 of the North Division finals, allowing only 1 hit, walking 0 and striking out 8 over 9.0 shutout innings. Moore was the Mariners 2nd round (compensation) selection, the 72nd overall pick, in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University.
 
THE EDGAR MARTINEZ PTPA (PRODUCTIVE TEAM PLATE APPEARANCE) AWARD
Dalton Kelly (INF: 2015 - 38th round - UC Santa Barbara)
 
Kelly, 22, received the Edgar Martinez PTPA (Productive Team Plate Appearance) Award after being recognized as the best hitter in the Mariners organization that embodied the Control the Zone philosophy, instilling a team approach at the plate instead of an individual approach. Kelly reached base safely in 112 of 130 games with Clinton, batting .293 (141x481) with 70 runs scored, 30 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs, 58 RBI, 11 HBP, 63 walks and 21 stolen bases. His .293 batting average was tied with OF Tyler O'Neill and INF Kyle Petty for the 8th-best among all Mariners farmhands. Among Midwest League leaders ranked T1st in intentional walks (5), 3rd in total plate appearances (564), 5th in on-base percentage (.384), T5th in hits (141) and games played (130), T6th in HBP (11), T8th in runs scored, T9th in at-bats (481), 10th in total bases (200), 12th in OPS (.800), T12th in extra-base hits (41), doubles (30) and stolen bases (21) and T13th in average (.293). Kelly reached base safely in 29 of his first 30 games to start the season, including recording a season-high 13-game hitting streak, April 19-May 2 (.412/21x51, 10 R, 3 2B, 3B, HR, 6 RBI, HBP, 7 BB, 3 SB). He was the one of four LumberKings to be selected to the Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star team, going 1-for-3 with 1 run scored, 1 double and 1 RBI as the starting first baseman. Kelly was selected in the 38th round by the Mariners in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of UC Santa Barbara.
 
THE ALVIN DAVIS "MR. MARINER" AWARD
Zach Shank (INF: 2013 - 28th round - Marist College)
 
Shank, 25, received the Alvin Davis "Mr. Mariner" Award for his exemplary play and leadership skills both on and off the field this season. He spent the majority of the season with Tacoma, but also appeared in 39 games with Jackson, April 7-May 21. Overall he hit .290 (120x414) with 61 runs scored, 19 doubles, 4 triples, 3 home runs, 39 RBI, 35 walks and 1 stolen bases in 120 games combined between Jackson and Tacoma. He spent a majority of his games this season at third base, but has also appeared in games at second base, shortstop and all three outfield positions. Shank made his AAA debut with Tacoma on May 22 vs. Iowa (0x1 as PH) and over 2 stints with the Rainiers, May 22-June 11 and June 20-Sept. 10, hit .292 (82x281) with 41 runs scored, 16 double, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 22 RBI and 23 walks over 81 games. Shank was the Mariners 28th round selection in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft of Marist College.
 
THE DAN WILSON MINOR LEAGUE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
David Rollins (LHP: Selected by Seattle from Houston in the Major League phase of the 2014 Rule 5 Draft)
 
Rollins, 26, spent a majority of the season with Tacoma, but also appeared in 11 games with Seattle over 5 different stints. In 37 relief appearances with the Rainiers, he went 5-0 with 2 saves and a 3.77 ERA (19 ER, 45.1 IP). The 6-foot-1, 200-pound left-handed pitcher limited opponents to a .236 (39x165) average, while walking 6 and striking out 32. Rollins, who was also one of three players to receive the Rainiers Community Service award, was honored for his individual effort in the Tacoma community. Rollins made several visits to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital over the course of the season, visiting with patients and their families, while also making numerous trips to Boys and Girls Clubs all over the South Sound. He also participated in numerous community events including youth baseball camps, speaking appearances and autograph sessions. Rollins was selected by Seattle from Houston in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft on December 11, 2014.
 
THE DAVE HENDERSON MINOR LEAGUE STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR
Mitch Canham (Manager - Clinton LumberKings)
 
In his first season in the Mariners organization, Manager Mitch Canham was named the Dave Henderson Minor League Staff Member of the Year after leading the Clinton LumberKings to the Midwest League Championship series. The LumberKings finished the 2016 season with an 86-56 record, which broke a Clinton franchise record of 83 wins that was previously set in 1963. Clinton led all Mariners minor league affiliations in wins, recorded the best record in the Midwest League and finished the season with the 5th-most wins among all minor leagues. The LumberKings defeated Peoria in the Midwest League Quarterfinals and Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League Semifinals before falling to Great Lakes 3-1 in the best-of-five Midwest League Championship Series. The Lake Stevens, Washington resident, Canham starred as a catcher at Oregon State University, winning back to back NCAA Division I national championships (2006 and 2007). He was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the first round (57th/Compensation A) in the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He played in 8 seasons in the minor leagues from 2007 through 2014, reaching the AAA level playing with the Padres, Athletics, Cardinals, Royals, and Nationals organizations. He also spent the 2015 season playing in the Independent League before entering his coaching career. He is the founder and CEO of BASE By Pros LLC, an organization that provides personalized baseball instruction and mentorship to kids around the country.
