SEATTLE -- Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto added another versatile veteran to the Mariners' 40-man roster on Thursday as utility infielder/outfielder Andrew Romine was claimed off waivers from the Tigers.
The 31-year-old played all nine positions for the Tigers during the 2017 season, appearing at each spot -- including pitcher and catcher -- in one game on Sept. 30 in a 3-2 win at Minnesota.
Romine posted a .233/.289/.336 line with four home runs and 25 RBIs in a career-high 318 at-bats last season for the Tigers. He played four seasons with the Angels from 2010-13 and the last four with the Tigers, with a career line of .238/.294/.307.
Romine appeared in 51 games in the outfield last season, as well as 27 at second base, 23 at third, 22 at first base and 10 at shortstop, plus the one game at pitcher and catcher. He became the fifth player in MLB history to play all nine defensive spots in one game.
Romine was selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2007 Draft out of Arizona State. His father, Kevin Romine, was an outfielder with the Red Sox from 1985-91 and his brother, Austin, is a catcher with the Yankees.
Romine was still with the Angels in 2011 when Dipoto became their general manager. He was traded by Dipoto to the Tigers in 2014 for reliever Jose Alvarez.
Romine earned $1.3 million last year and is arbitration eligible this offseason before becoming a free agent in 2019. His addition puts the Mariners' 40-man roster currently at 35 players.
